Ben has moved steadily up the ranks since first competing as a senior at Canadian Nationals in 1997. He won his first senior medal, a bronze, at 2002 Canadians in Calgary, and a 10th place finish at the Four Continents Championship that same year enabled him to go to Worlds in Nice, France, where he finished 19th overall. He won his second National bronze medal at 2001 Canadians in Vancouver.
One of his most notable accomplishments came at the end of the 2001-2002 season. Ben had not expected to compete at the World level, but when Elvis Stojko withdrew from Worlds after the 2002 Olympics, it gave Ben a very last-minute berth at the event in Nagano. He placed a very respectable 15th despite very little preparation time. Most recently, a career high was reached at the 2004 Canadian National Championships, which saw Ben landing a quad-triple combo in his short program and another clean quad in the long program as part of two back-to back personal best skates to win the silver medal there.
Ben's technique is consistently improving since coming under the expertise of renowned Canadian coach Doug Leigh, and he expects to stay in Olympic-eligible competition until at least 2006.
