MONDAY, JAN. 15 - QUALIFICATION ROUND
I couldn't get everyone a report because i was taking pictures at the same time. Also from where we were sitting I couldn't see the jumps done in the far right corner so some will be missing. For each skater i'll list the jumps they did as best i can.
group A
FEDOR ANDREEV-Second to
skate in this first group Fedor really did not do that well. He started
with a nice 3toe then popped the 3a into a 2a. He went for the 3a
again, but fell. The troubles continued with a popped lutz/2toe and
a 3a popped into a single. Fedor again popped the second lutz but
came back at the end of the program with a couple more triples. His
marks were from 4.6-5.2 for technical and 4.8-5.2 for presentation.
He didn't even stick around to hear the marks so was obviously dissapointed.
Fedor was 4th in his group.
JAYSON DENOMMEE- Jayson had the best skate of the night and is leading in group A. He started off with a huge 3a/2loop followed by a 3t then a 3 lutz, and a 3 loop( all clean). He popped his second 3a with a turned out 2a. He went for the second lutz combo but fell on the 2toe at the end, and ended the jazzy pragram with a nice easy 2a. Jayson's marks were 5.4-5.6 for tech, and 5.3-5.7 for presentation.
JEFF LANGDON- Still on the comback road, Jeff's performance was not that bad here. He first attemped the 3a but fell then popped the lutz into a double. He tried the triple axel again but fell again. He bounced back with a nice 3 sal followed by a 3loop. Fell on the second lutz but finished with a clean 3 flip and 3toe. It was unfortunate that Jeff couln't get his lutzes going because the program over all is stong. He has such good line in his spins and flow out of his jumps. Jeff's marks ranged from 4.1-5.1 for tech and 4.6-5.3 for presentation. Jeff is in 5th place
SEAN WIRTZ- Sean really skated quite well. The only major mistake was a miss on the opening 3a but almost all of his other jumps were clean( 3 lutz, flip, 3sal, 3lutz/2toe, etc) He doubled the 3 loop, but overall the program held together quite nicely with fairly good marks. 5.0-5.3(i think) for tech and 4.6-5.4 for presentation. Sean is in a strong 3rd place
BEN FERREIRA- Ben only hit about 5 triples this time but still managed to hang on to second place in his group. He tripled the first attempted quad, fell on both of his 3a's Got in a 3 lutz, 3flip, 3 loop( a nice one!), and a 3 sal. He wasn't very thrilled with his performance and knows that to win this competition he will have to come up with one better on Saturday. Ben's marks were 5.2's and 5.3's for technical merit and from 5.3-5.5 for presentation.
GROUP B
EMANUAL SANDHU - If Emanual
has any hopes of claiming the title, he MUST over come his nerves.
He did great in practice, but struggled a bit here. He opened with
a quad( i think) but it was 2 footed. He went on to do a nice 3a
but popped the lutz. On the second 3a he fell but got right back
up and tried it again--single. Had a nice 3loop/3t combo followed
by another popped single lutz. He ended with a 3 toe and his fabulous
spins. Emanual's marks were from 4.9-5.4 and his presentation going
up from 5.3-5.7.
JEFF BUTTLE - Jeff managed to get some fine triples included into his program, but popped a few of his jumps and had a turn out on the 3 flip. Coached by Doug Leigh, many people are expecting great things from this youngster. His marks were from 4.9-5.2 and for presentation, 4.9-5.5.
DAVID SHULTZ - Another hometown hero from the Winnipeg winter club who really skated quite well, but was way undermarked(IMHO) He had a bunch of solid triples including the Lutz and the 3f/2t combo. No 3a tho, but a beauty of a 2a. Boos from the crowd when the marks were announced 4.7-5.0 and 4.6-4.8 presentation. I liked the program.
NICHOLAS YOUNG - I think this young kid had the only clean skate of the nite. He only 2 footed the 3a at the beginning but the rest was solid. He had some great 3/2 combos along withe both lutzs and a 3 loop. This guy was one of my picks for a rising star. He is also coached by Paul Wirtz. For tech, Nick recieved 4.9-5.4 and for presentation, 4.9-5.5.
RAVI WALIA - The Vetran and
the last to skate in the competition, Ravi had a decent skate as well.
He 2 footed a few of his jumps( quad and loop), a clean 3lutz and flip
but popped the sal. Ravi ended with a clean 3toe. His marks
were from 4.8-5.3 and 4.9-5.4.
